Tips for Studying & Teaching Anatomy

Teaching Standard

Become familiar with priorities and guidelines for studying and utilizing knowledge of anatomy and physiology in teaching.

Assessment

  1. Define “anatomy,” “physiology” and “biomechanics.”
  2. Discuss the importance of recognizing that anatomy uses models to convey information.
  3. What guidelines can help you to effectively utilize knowledge of anatomy in yoga teaching?
  4. What trick might help ensure that when teaching with anatomy-related terminology, you take care to use it properly?
  5. What specific things can you do to help ensure you’re being clear when referencing anatomy while teaching?
  6. Continuing to develop your understanding of anatomy and physiology is quite likely to make you a stronger teacher. How?
  7. Provide five wise tips for effectively sharing anatomy teachings with students.
  8. Give an example of a cue that is actually anatomically impossible. What might you say instead?

Anatomy & Study for Safety and Accommodations

Teaching Standard

Be clear about what specific steps you can take to better understand various conditions and to support students with such conditions.

Assessment

  1. Describe a common and unspoken assumption regarding the health and ability of students in drop-in asana
  2. Note conditions that may be expected among students in drop-in classes.
  3. It’s inevitable that you will encounter situations that are beyond your skill or comfort level. What can you do?
  4. How can you prepare yourself to better understand various conditions and support students with such conditions?
  5. What outcomes can you expect from methodically studying foundational anatomy and physiology?
  6. Provide a recommended list of foundational anatomy, biomechanics and physiology knowledge for yoga teachers.
  7. The list of foundational anatomy and physiology lessons seems quite long. Are those all really necessary and if so, why?
  8. Which injuries and conditions might reasonably be expected to be safely accommodated in any yoga class?
  9. Provide learning priorities when studying injuries and conditions.
