In this lesson, we explore considerations related to bone health, bones fractures, and the diagnoses of osteopenia and osteoporosis.
Objective
Be familiar with factors that affect bone health and strength, issues related to measuring it, what causes bone fractures, the medical definitions of osteopenia and osteoporosis, and the effects of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for them.
Description
Discuss the words “strength” and “density” as they relate to bone health. Discuss how weight-bearing activities provide vital stimulation for bone health, and the impact of nutrient deficiency, hormonal issues, heavy metal exposure, and pharmaceuticals on bone health. Define osteopenia and osteoporosis, and describe the criteria used to diagnose them. Explain how the norm for bone mineral density (BMD) has been defined and the inadequacies of this diagnostic criteria. Provide verifiable reports on the effects of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed for osteopenia and osteoporosis.
