Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we explore terminology associated with mental health, emotional balance and mental illness.

Objective

Consider how emotions are related to a healthy and natural response to life, and become familiar with terminology used to describe mental health concerns.

Description

Explain what is meant by the terms “mental health” and “emotional balance.” Be clear that feelings that may be classified as “negative” are nonetheless healthy and natural, and that a wide range of emotional states reflects a healthy and natural response to life. Explain how the experience of emotions (including negative ones) is reflective of emotional balance. Explain the term “mental illness,” and provide other terms that have the same meaning. Differentiate “mental illness” from general mental health concerns and how this is relevant to discussions related to yoga and mental health. Explain how awareness of mental health concerns is helpful for yoga teachers. Recount the prevalence of chronic anxiety and of depression. Note how you might refer out for a mental health protocol.

Vocabulary

emotional balance, emotional imbalance, mental disorder, mental health, mental illness, psychological disorder
