In this lesson, we explore research and considerations for choosing and adapting yoga techniques for students with arthritis.
Objective
Apply knowledge of arthritis and yoga, plus research results, to inform the choice and adaptation of yoga techniques for students with arthritis.
Description
Cite research that demonstrates yoga’s impact on people with arthritis, paying special attention to the randomized control trials. Describe ways in which yoga techniques can help to alleviate arthritis symptoms and promote wellness. Note the styles of yoga that are contraindicated for arthritis and the types of postures to avoid. Provide five questions to ask students who have arthritis. List three foundational principles for students with arthritis and the general approach to asana that will best serve them. Provide a practice objective and sample practices for students with osteoarthritis, and for those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
