Lesson Overview

In this lesson, we explore the distinguishing factors of chronic pain and why it requires a different approach from working with acute pain.

Objective

Distinguish chronic pain from acute pain (which involves much more than symptom duration), and review causes, consequences, and successes.

Description

Cite the prevalence of chronic pain worldwide. Explain what is meant by the fact that chronic pain (unlike acute pain) is no longer reliably connected to what is happening in the body. List symptoms of chronic pain and some of the wide-ranging effects that the presence of chronic pain can induce. Compare and contrast chronic and acute pain. Note conditions that may be causing or directly related to chronic pain. Describe how some people have found the keys to their success in lessening or resolving chronic pain.
